AMD 1-Shrek auf Deutsch

For my AMD eins assignment I watched the movie "Shrek" mit English subtitles. Admittedly my first reaction was laughter. Having the familiar characters and voices of Shrek speaking in German turned out to be unexpectedly funny. Following my initial bout of immaturity however, I was very pleased have been able to recognize a decent amount of words. Though this "decent amount" works out to be the vast minority of the movie's vocabulary, it was encouraging just to have any amount of word recognition. For example, a couple common phrases that were easily recognizable and came up multiple times were "Wie heissen sie? Ich heisse...." and "Wo kommen sie? Ich komme aus...". Experiencing this kind of application for the small amount of German learned thus far was surprisingly satisfying. Though a movie will be nearly twice as long as the 45 minutes required for this assignment, I highly recommend it to others for future AMD assignments. So much German at once will end up being a bit exhausting but it really is a fun way to utilize (and even realize) the knowledge you've gained.

AMD 1- Ethan Auburn

For my first post I decided to try to find a team in the German soccer league to follow in hopes of following my team in German. I thought this would be a cool way to follow a foriegn team as the Bundesliga doesn't got a ton of American press so I would have to do some reading/watching in German. After considering my choices I picked Borussia Dortmund, a team from Dortmund ( duh) the 7th largest city in Germany. I picked it mainly because they have the largest stadium (80k) in Germany so I'm guessing that the atmosphere must be pretty good. Their colors are gelb and schwarz, so at least they have the gelb part down eh? I'm looking forward to following them all year and I will be sure to provide updates on how my (now) beloved Die Borusen are doing!

AMD 1

Hallo! I read the article from the New York Times since the subject of the first blog assig really occupied my mind... it is really interesting to think about every aspect of every part of my life and wonder where it originates. Being part-Japanese, I've always enjoyed a mix of my American and Japanese backgrounds, with special holidays like Girls' Day and Boys' Day.

I have to admit I laughed at the image the description of Mr. Michaelis created in my head, but mainly I have just been surprised at the apparent reaction to the "Wild West" in Germany. Just like the author, I had absolutely no idea the extent of the obsession and the number of venues etc. there are, like the powwows. To me it reveals the power of the written language especially with the unknown, in this case America to the Germans. Karl May, even with his "tall-tale"s had the force to inspire this fervor...Although this must have seemed exciting and thrilling for his audience, I think the real thing or the reality of cultures in their purest sense is best.

I went to Austria and Germany in the spring on an orchestra trip, visiting Wien and Salzburg and Munich. I have to say Salzburg was my favorite especially in the super non-touristy areas...

Oh, one more thing, I had schnitzel like every day there... like three different kinds.
